How engineering CPD works in South Africa

Registered engineers have to earn CPD credits, and the information about what earns them is scattered across the professional bodies. These are the questions that come up most, answered plainly — with the statutory detail left to ECSA, where it belongs.

What does this index actually contain?

Two things the professional bodies publish separately. A validated activity is a course a body has assessed and assigned a credit value to, together with the period that validation stands. A session is a specific sitting you can book, on a date, run by a provider. The registers publish the first and the calendars publish the second, and almost never in the same place - so this index joins them on the validation number where both exist.

How many CPD credits do I need?

That is set by ECSA in its CPD Rules, not by this index, and the numbers change - so rather than repeat a figure that might be out of date, check the current rules directly at ECSA’s CPD documents page. What this index can tell you is what each activity is worth, according to the body that validated it.

What is a Category 1 activity?

ECSA groups CPD into developmental activities, work-based activities and service to the profession. Everything indexed here is the first kind - courses, workshops, conferences and technical talks validated by a recognised body - which is the category you generally cannot earn simply by doing your job. The per-category minimums and annual caps are in ECSA’s CPD Rules.

How are credits calculated?

The bodies validate at roughly one credit per training day, with an hour-long technical talk earning about a tenth of a credit. That is a pattern observed across the registers rather than a rule quoted from one, so treat the figure on a listing as the body’s claim and confirm it on the certificate you are issued.

Does a validation period tell me when a course runs?

No, and this is the most common misreading of a register. The validation period is how long the body’s assessment stands - often three to five years. It says nothing about whether the provider has scheduled a sitting. If a listing shows no date, the course is validated but not currently on a calendar we read; contact the provider.

What if a course I want is not listed?

It may still carry credits. This index reads ten sources; ECSA recognises fifty-one voluntary associations, and most of them do not publish their register in a form a machine can read. A course absent from here is not a course without credits - check with the provider and with the body that would have validated it.

Is this an official ECSA, CESA or SAIMechE site?

No. It is an independent index built and maintained by Inokrate, not affiliated with any body or provider listed, selling nothing and taking no commission on any booking. Every entry links back to the register or calendar it came from, and where they disagree with this page, they are right.

How current is the data?

Every source is re-read weekly and each one’s last successful read is published in the footer of this site. A source that has gone stale says so rather than quietly presenting old records as current.
